Salem Mitchell is a model, creative, and restless advocate for diversity and inclusivity. Fully aware of the responsibility that comes with a large social media following, Salem does not shy away from having honest conversations about real-life issues on her platform from topics such as body image to Black Lives Matter. That is probably what makes the young model one of the most refreshing faces and voices in the industry today.
Salem was first introduced to fashion while attending San Diego School for Creative and Performing Arts. Growing up, Salem was teased for having freckles and was often compared to a bruised banana. Instead of becoming a victim, she embraced the comparison and posted a series of playful selfies alongside a banana. Those images quickly went viral and caught the attention of a model agency. After landing a modeling contract, Salem quickly started working with the likes of Beyoncé, Gucci, H&M, Fenty Skin, Nike, Levi's, and starred in Rihanna’s first Savage x Fenty campaign. She has been profiled in publications such as Vogue, i-D, Harper’s Bazaar, Allure and been featured on the covers of Numéro Berlin, L’Officiel Paris and L'Officiel Mexico. On the music front, Salem is featured on popstar Khalid’s album “Sun City” and has credit on his single “Salem’s Interlude”.
When she's not modeling, Salem is actively using her platform to speak on the issues she’s passionate about. She also stresses the importance of checking all discriminatory behavior and touches on topics like cultural appropriation with her audience. Salem's raw online conversations surrounding Black Lives Matter contributed to her being featured in this year's TIME Magazine's "Reckoning", a video project that examined the cultural response to the viral videos that have helped give rise to one of the largest civil rights movements in recent history. Salem is also a proud member of Brown Girl Butterfly Project, a collective that aims to facilitate self-care for Black and Brown communities around the world.
